On
their way home from a trip to Connecticut, Linda Draper and Rob Cork went in to an antique
store on a country road. The treasure they would end up owning was actually waiting for
them outside in the form of a little black and white cat in the bushes. They stopped to
pet her, and the owner of the store came out and said, "You can have her if you want
her. When they closed the store next door, they just left her here." According to
Rob, Linda gave him a "can-we-keep-her" look, so they put her in their car. A
few miles down the road, they stopped to buy her food, and she ate four packages at once;
she was very thin and obviously very hungry. On the way home, Linda and Rob fell in love with their extremely affectionate and friendly cat. However, they were moving to a new apartment within a week and had not even contemplated having a pet. Upon arriving home, they immediately called their new landlord, but he did not feel he could make an exception to his no-pets policy. They decided to bring the cat to the League, and even donated the money to have her spayed. Rob said they then cried all the way home, overcome with having to part with her, but glad that they had been able to give her a second chance. But when they woke up the next morning, "We decided we couldn't live without her." They redoubled their efforts to persuade their landlord to allow them to have her. Four days later, he finally gave in. In addition to the cat having ear mites and worms, the League staff had noticed that one of her eyes seemed injured. When she was sent to be spayed, the veterinarian recommended that the eye be removed. Linda and Rob offered to help with the costs of the surgery. Linda and Rob certainly rose to the occasion when this little cat came into their lives, and their enthusiasm couldn't be greater. Her new name is Gypsy Post--Gypsy because they both love the theater and in honor of her earlier travels, Post in honor of the adventurer Wiley Post, who also had only one eye. It took Gypsy some time to settle in, but she now comes running when they walk through the front door. Rob and Linda are very glad they took the opportunity to help Gypsy, because she has "made our new place truly a home." |
